Ridge Augmentation In Aventura, FL

Overview

After a tooth has been extracted, the surrounding area (such as the gumline or the jaw) can lose its natural shape. A tooth’s root normally extends into a socket in the alveolar ridge, the bony ridge that holds the teeth. When there’s no root in place, that socket will fill with bone and tissue so it looks normal. In some cases, the socket wall is lost, preventing any bone or tissue from filling it up. To correct this issue, Aventura, FL dentist Dr. David Bistritz will graft bone material in place to restore the ridge to its natural shape. This process is called ridge augmentation. Just like regular bone grafts, ridge augmentation can help support a dental implant. Call Aventura Dental Center to see if you are a candidate for this restorative procedure.

Ridge Augmentation Benefits

Ridge augmentation procedures have been proven to benefit the overall health of a patient’s smile, improving their appearance and boosting their confidence. In addition, the ridge augmentation procedure:

  • Recreates a natural bone and gum ridge
  • Improves aesthetic appearance
  • Increases stability for long-term function and oral health
  • Reduces gaps between the gums and dental restorations

What To Expect

A ridge augmentation procedure is most commonly performed in our facility under local anesthesia. Sedation options are available and will be discussed with patients beforehand. During the simple surgical procedure, bone graft material will be placed into the exposed tooth socket. This may be done immediately after an extraction. Following the placement of the graft material, the gum tissue will be carefully placed over the socket and the wound will be closed, usually with sutures. After a healing period, the ridge is considered ready for dental restorations such as dental implants.

Treatment Aftercare

The specific aftercare treatment will vary from person to person depending on their unique situation. Following a patient’s ridge augmentation procedure, Dr. Bistritz and our Aventura Dental Center team will discuss wound care as well as oral hygiene routines. We may suggest antibacterial mouthwash and pain medications to prevent infection and relieve discomfort. Should a patient become worried during the healing process, our staff will be available to answer questions and address concerns.
