What Are Dentures?
Dentures are fixtures designed by your dentist to replace several missing teeth. There are various types of dentures, each of which may offer unique benefits that are ideal for your situation. When you lose a tooth or teeth to injury or dental disease, it is important that you replace it. Doing so not only restores the appearance of your smile but also establishes the functional foundation that you need for biting and chewing. Your dentist can help you determine which type of denture is most appropriate for you based on a thorough dental exam and consultation.
Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Dentures?
If you have missing teeth, you may be a good candidate for dentures. This treatment has helped millions of people regain confidence and optimal chewing function, even people who have suffered from severe dental disease. The question isn’t so much if you are a good candidate for tooth replacement treatment but which type of tooth replacement will best meet your needs. To help you decide, your dentist will review the details of each type of denture with you and answer questions you have about care, function, maintenance, and more. The information discussed can help you discern whether you would prefer a removable denture that you can take out and clean on your own or a fixed denture, such as one that is affixed to a few dental implants. There is no question that missing teeth should be replaced. We’re here to help you discover the best method for your smile.
How To Prepare For Dentures Procedure?
To prepare for your new dentures, all you need to do is schedule your visit with us! Getting dentures doesn’t have to be an intimidating or stressful process. At Aventura Dental Center, Dr. Bistritz discusses exactly what needs to happen throughout the denture process. To set the tooth-replacement journey into motion, he will perform a thorough dental examination. If you need to have one or more teeth extracted, this will be scheduled as the first step in your treatment plan. If extractions are necessary, there may be a brief recovery period in between that procedure and the pre-treatment measurements and impressions taken for your new dentures. If you choose to replace missing teeth with an implant-supported bridge or denture, you may be advised to take a few pre-treatment precautions, such as avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements. Generally, though, you prepare for your denture treatment by simply taking good care of your remaining teeth and gums.

How Long Will It Take To Get Used To Dentures?
It can take approximately one month to get used to the feel of your new dentures. After that time, you can expect your bite to feel normal and capable of biting and chewing pretty much any food. During your first few days of having new dentures, you will want to eat softer foods. Prepare for this time by having foods like eggs, soup, oatmeal, and pasta on hand. You can eat fruits and vegetables, but need them to be soft. For the first two weeks of your denture wear, you may notice a slight change in your speech. You may also notice some soreness or sore spots on your gums where your dentures may be rubbing. Sore spots are not uncommon and can often improve by rinsing your mouth with warm salty water a few times a day. If this does not help, contact our office. Your dentures may need to be adjusted. After two weeks, natural sore spots should begin to improve significantly, and you will be consistently acclimating to the feel of your new teeth.
Will Dentures Damage My Oral Health?
Wearing dentures does not harm your oral health provided that you take good care of your mouth. As soon as your dentist says it is ok to remove your new dentures, it is important that you do so for about eight hours a day. Usually, we recommend that people remove their dentures when they go to bed. Upon removal, the dentures can be gently brushed clean and placed in an appropriate denture solution. These care practices eliminate harmful bacteria that could linger on the dentures and then hop onto the gums, tongue, cheeks, and into the bloodstream. If you have a partial denture, it is necessary to take very good care of your remaining teeth by brushing them twice a day. You also much floss daily to reduce the risk of gum disease and oral infection.
What To Expect
The procedure for dentures starts with preparing the patient’s mouth, which may include extractions, cleanings, or filing the natural teeth. Then digital x-rays and physical impressions will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory where custom dentures will be created. Meanwhile, Dr. Bistritz will give you temporary dentures to wear. When the custom dentures are completed, Dr. Bistritz will adjust as needed to give you your most comfortable and secure fit. You may schedule a follow-up appointment after your dentures are first fitted so Dr. Bistritz can check and adjust their fit.
Treatment Aftercare
Care instructions for dentures will be provided by our office to help you keep your dentures clean and in good condition. Removable dentures can last 2 – 10 years with proper care, including regular dental exams to check the wear of your dentures and the health of your gums and mouth.
Insurance Coverage
Complete and partial dentures are usually covered at least in part by dental insurance. Our office will contact your insurance company to calculate what your insurance will pay and the amount of your personal cost. Please talk to our office if you will be undergoing treatment without dental coverage, as we offer several financing plans that can assist you.
