More Than Just A Pretty Smile: The Case For InvisalignDentists have been prescribing Invisalign for nearly twenty years. In 2002, the clear aligner system was used by 80,000 people. In 2019, more than 8 million patients had been treated with the Invisalign system. We know why. Initially, Invisalign had been developed to treat orthodontic relapse, a shift that would occur after a patient stopped wearing their retainer after completing a course of metal braces. Today, this system is prescribed to correct a wide range of misalignment issues.

Invisalign is an excellent alternative to metal braces for many teens and adults. The clear, comfortable treatment has no brackets or wires. It has virtually no restrictions, other than not eating or drinking with aligners inserted. The design of the clear aligners make them easy to use and wear day and night, which is necessary to achieve the predicted outcome. In addition to providing a relatively easy treatment process, Invisalign also makes it easy for patients to get started on a great new smile.

To start using Invisalign, a patient receives a full dental examination and cleaning. If necessary, the dentist treats existing dental or periodontal concerns. Precise measurements of the mouth, bite, and teeth are obtained using a digital 3D scanner. Images and measurements are used to create custom-fit aligners for the patient. Each set of aligners is fabricated to place sufficient force on teeth to move them into proper position.  When worn as directed, approximately 22 hours a day, and switched every two weeks, aligners can recreate a smile in 12 to 18 months.

Why Patients Love Invisalign

There are few downsides to Invisalign. Patients love that they don’t have to change their eating habits to get a great smile. Aligners are removed at mealtime. There is also no need to alter oral care habits. After removing aligners, patients can brush and floss normally. Dental cleanings can also continue normally. Of course, patients also love that Invisalign gives them a straight, attractive smile that they feel confident showing off. What WE love about Invisalign is that it makes our patients smile! And also, we love that, along with more attractiveness and confidence, we know that a straight smile is a healthier smile. There are fewer nooks and crannies for bacteria to hide, so less risk of tooth decay down the line as long as oral care remains consistent.
